Global Commodity Supply Shocks Deepen Amid El Niño Threats and Shipping Bottlenecks

A series of compounding supply-side disruptions across energy, agriculture, and marine resources is raising fresh alarms over global commodity stability and long-term inflationary pressures. From critical maritime chokepoints to climate-induced fishing halts, the global supply chain is facing a multi-front bottleneck that economists warn could extend pressures well into 2027.

In the energy sector, transit through the world's most vital maritime chokepoint has slowed dramatically. Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz dwindled to a crawl on Wednesday, with traffic limited to only a few mostly Iran-linked vessels following the exit of major supertankers. This sudden drop-off underscores the highly volatile, stop-start nature of energy transit in the region, threatening to disrupt global oil flows and inject further volatility into energy markets.

Simultaneously, Europe is grappling with domestic energy security concerns. In Germany, gas grid operators are urgently calling for a sweeping overhaul of storage filling incentives. The operators warned that stubbornly low inventory levels are significantly heightening the risk of severe supply shortages ahead of the upcoming winter, demanding immediate regulatory changes to encourage replenishment.

Beyond energy, the looming threat of a weather-roiling El Niño is beginning to severely impact food and marine commodities. Peru has extended its halt on anchovy fishing due to the rapid warming of Pacific waters off its coast, a move aimed at protecting marine populations but one that will inevitably squeeze global fishmeal supplies. In agricultural markets, the weather pattern is stoking fears of an impending grocery inflation wave. Arkady Gevorkyan, Citi Commodities Strategist, noted that El Niño is poised to heavily impact pricing across key commodities, particularly sugar. Coupled with tariffs, a dwindling domestic cattle herd, and geopolitical friction, these weather anomalies are expected to keep upward pressure on food prices at an above-average pace.
